The Cruise Saver Express was introduced in 2010, with the goal of resurrecting boat trains to transport ferry and cruise passengers from major towns and cities to principal ports. Both DB Schenker (which had taken over EWS) and Direct Rail Services (DRS) formed special trains from a variety of Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 coaching stock. To provide luggage space, DB Schenker resurrected one of its BR Mk1 Super BGs - No. 94538 - which had its Rail Express Systems livery replaced by EWS maroon to match the company's existing EWS-liveried charter stock. With the train operating between Scotland and Southampton, there is a lot of scope for our latest model to appear on layouts based on many parts of the country!
Our version of No. 94538 (374-775K) is fitted with BR4 Bogies just like the prototype, plus a beautiful rendition of the maroon and lined gold livery.
This Graham Farish model employs a detailed bodyshell, with fine mouldings of the roller shutter doors, including the shutter vanes which are engraved individually, and the guard’s door with its adjacent handrails. At each end the corridor connector, handrails, ETH equipment and tail lights are each moulded crisply, whilst below the solebar the truss rod frames are modelled with great finesse, flanked by the battery boxes, dynamo and other auxiliary equipment. Blackened metal wheelsets are fitted to each bogie to ensure free-running.
