HISTORY

The only survivor of this once 113-strong class, No. 69023 was built by BR at Darlington in April 1951 and allocated to Blaydon depot where it remained until October 1962 when it moved the short distance to Gateshead. In October 1964 it was transferred to Departmental Service stock and renumbered to No. 59. In departmental service, it was used at Blyth harbour staithes and to de-ice points in Tyne Yard. After a period in store, No. 59 was sold in September 1966 and entered preservation, its departmental service having ensured its survival.

It was purchased by Mr R Ainsworth who named it ‘Joem’ in honour of his parents (Joseph and Emmeline) and the locomotive was taken to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1969 where it was restored. No. 69023 saw service on the Derwent Valley Railway at York but following the death of its owner, the loco was stored at the National Railway Museum.

In November 1982, the locomotive was purchased by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG), with the aid of a grant from the Science Museum, and was delivered to Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in January 1983 – remaining in traffic until late 1985 before undergoing overhaul at I.C.I Wilton. At the same time, a repaint into NER/BR pattern lined green was undertaken, this style of livery was inspired by British Railways’ action in repainting two J72s, Nos. 68723 and 68736, for use on station pilot duties at Newcastle and York in NER green in the early-1960s.

Following restoration, the J72 returned to the NYMR but has also travelled to many other railways and heritage events. A further overhaul was required when No. 69023’s boiler certificate expired in 1996, but work would not commence until 2004 when it was taken to the NELPG’s Hopetown workshops in Darlington. Returning to traffic in 2010, the loco was based on the Wensleydale Railway but continued to be a popular visitor to other lines. Following the 2017 season ‘Joem’ returned to Darlington and in early-2018 the decision was taken to start a general overhaul, which would give the loco a new ten-year boiler ticket – works started in earnest and are currently ongoing.
