HISTORY

The Class 57 locomotives were re-built from redundant Class 47s by Brush Traction in Loughborough between 1997-2004, with new engines and other components fitted to improve reliability and performance. Although some external modifications were also made, the link to the Class 47 was obvious and so the class gained the nickname ‘Bodysnatchers’. No. 57307 started life as Brush Sulzer Type 4 No. D1901, emerging from the Brush Falcon Works, Loughborough in 1965.

Renumbered to 47225 in 1974 under the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS), the locomotive remained in traffic until 2002 before it was sent to Brush for rebuilding, emerging as No. 57307 in 2003.

Virgin Trains ordered 12 locomotives, classified as 57/3s, to act as emergency rescue locomotives and these were named after the characters from the 1960s TV series ‘Thunderbirds’. A further order took the fleet of Virgin locomotives to 16, each of which was fitted with automatic Dellner coupling devices for use with ‘Pendolino’ units.

As Virgin’s requirements for the locomotives dwindled, they were returned to the leasing company who found work for them with other operators. In 2013, No. 57307 was leased to Direct Rail Services (DRS) and was outshopped in DRS livery with ‘Cable Thieves: We’re Watching You’ graphics as part of a joint campaign between British Transport Police, Network Rail, Virgin Trains and DRS to crack down on cable theft. The locomotive also retained its ‘Lady Penelope’ nameplates and was the only ex-Thunderbird to do so. The locomotive later received new graphics marking DRS’s 20th anniversary.
